Author: Valérie Vermandel

Among Whitewood’s notable achievements are the Renolab Awards garnered by three of its flagship buildings: Multi, Oxy, and Regent 47.

In the vibrant urban landscape of Brussels Capital, Whitewood emerges as a beacon of sustainable innovation, setting new standards for environmental direction and community integration. The company’s commitment to ESG principles is not only evident in its operations but also in its award-winning buildings, each exemplifying excellence in sustainability and decarbonization.

With those recognitations, Whitewood’s dedication is to redefining the built environment with a focus on sustainability, circularity, and community engagement.

Multi: Redefining Carbon Neutrality

Multi, crowned with the Renolab Award in 2018, represents a shift in sustainable construction. As the first carbon-neutral office building in Brussels, it stands as a testament to Whitewood’s unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility.

By repurposing 89% recycled materials from other buildings, Multi sets a new standard for resource efficiency.

For instance, the floor tiles, originally designed by Jules Wabbes, from the former General Bank in Brussels, covers now a surface of 200 m2, while the lamp profiles were repurposed from the building’s façade.

This commitment to reuse extends to the terrace tiles, salvaged from a dismantled building in Paris,  carefully treated and now lie in the lobby of Multi.

Moreover, the integration of heat pumps, solar panels, and innovative design strategies earned Multi the prestigious BREEAM Excellent environmental certification, confirming its status as the first carbon-neutral office building in Brussels.

But Multi’s sustainability goes beyond its carbon neutrality. The renovation of this building led to a revitalization of the surroundings area, transforming the area into a pedestrian-friendly zone with the addition of the vibrant “Rue de Laeken.”

With Multi, Whitewood not only reduce its carbon footprint but also fosters community involvment and urban regeneration.

Oxy: Circular Innovation at Its Finest

In 2022, Oxy took center stage, clinching the prestigious Renolab Award for its groundbreaking approach to circularity and decarbonization.

This architectural marvel was designed for adaptability, scalability, and future deconstruction in mind—a true testament to Whitewood’s commitment to sustainable longevity.

The project’s circularity strategy hinges on preserving over 80% of the existing building’s elements, integrating reusable materials, and recycling 90% of demolition waste.

Furthermore, Oxy aims to achieve the “Carbon Hero – A label” by prioritizing carbon-free materials and techniques, setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious construction practices.

But Oxy’s impact transcends its architectural prowess. By seamlessly integrating the renovated building with its neighborhood through promenades and rooftop spaces, Whitewood fosters social cohesion and community interaction, further solidifying its role as a steward of sustainable urban development.

Regent 47: Redefining Excellence in Renovation

Regent 47, honored with 2023 Renolab Award, epitomizes Whitewood’s relentless unwavering commitment to of excellence in energy renovation.

This ambitious project aims to transform an office building into a BREEAM-outstanding, certified beacon of sustainability.

Through meticulous facade renovations and innovative heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, Regent 47 sets a new standard for energy efficiency and water management.

Equipped with water wells, buffer basins, and infiltration installations, the project demonstrates Whitewood’s proactive approach to mitigating flood risks and conserving water resources.

Moreover, Regent 47 embraces renewable energy with the installation of air/water heat pumps and photovoltaic panels, further reducing its carbon footprint and setting a precedent for environmentally conscious development.

In conclusion, Whitewood’s Renolab Award-winning buildings stand as testaments to the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.

WithMulti, Oxy, and Regent 47, Whitewood is not only reshaping urban landscapes, but also paving the way for a greener, more resilient future, and continuing to set the standard for responsible construction practices.
